Fewer people expected to travel in Florida for Thanksgiving this year than last AAA says

Jacksonville FL — Thanksgiving week is usually one of the busiest travel times during the year, but this year due to the pandemic, AAA says fewer people will be traveling in Florida than last year. Originally AAA expected 2.8 million people in Florida to travel for Thanksgiving, mostly by car, but spokesperson Mark Jenkins says he expects that number will be lower after the CDC recommended people stay home for the holiday.

“If you do plan to travel this Thanksgiving holiday you want to do so safely. You know, do some research ahead of time on your destination.” Jenkins says.

In 2019 AAA says there were 2.91 million travelers during the Thanksgiving travel season.

He says this year people are opting to take more regionalized trips in their car verses traveling across the country.

“I think a lot of that just has to do with people preferring to drive because it creates, that that, your own bubble.” Jenkins says.

The good news is if you’re going to travel this year gas prices are expected to be lower than they were at this same time last year. Jenkins says we could see the lowest prices during Thanksgiving in some 12 years.

“I think that this is going to be a completely different Thanksgiving travel season than years past so travel trends could be totally different as well.” Jenkins says.

He says typically Wednesday is usually the busiest travel day of the week, with Thanksgiving Day the least busy. He suggests leaving in the morning to avoid any potential clogged roads.
