Thanksgiving Day Tony’s Turkey Trot for Brain Injury Awareness 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run, Walk & Roll

Jacksonville — Tony’s Turkey Trot for Brain Injury Awareness 5k and 1-Mile Fun Run, Walk & Roll will be held on Thanksgiving morning at the Beaches Town Center in Atlantic Beach. The 5K starts in waves at 7 a.m. followed by the 1-Mile Fun Run, Walk & Roll at 9:30. An awards ceremony - with a medal given to the best Thanksgiving Day costume - will round out the morning’s fun.

COVID 19 modifications will include separate start and finish lines and wave starts. Masking and social distancing are highly encouraged, although they are not mandated. There will also be a virtual 5K that enables runners to choose their own course and upload their results to the app to appear as though they were there in-person.

The annual event, now in its seventh year, will honor the contributions of Dr. Leon L. Haley Jr., the former CEO of UF Health Jacksonville who passed away in July. In previous years, Dr. Haley not only ran the Turkey Trot, he awarded medals during the post-race ceremony.

Mayor Ellen Glasser and the City of Atlantic Beach have proclaimed Nov. 25, 2021 as the “Dr. Leon L. Haley, Jr. Day of Thanks 2021.”

Presented by Stellar and Brooks Rehabilitation, the event is co-sponsored by UF Health Jacksonville and the Tony Meduri TBI Fund as a way to highlight Traumatic Brain Injuries, known as TBI’s, along with the holistic care to brain injury survivors.

Event proceeds will be used for organizations committed to brain injury awareness and will support brain injury care at UF Health, including the new UF Health Brain Wellness Program for local veterans. As Northeast Florida’s sole adult and pediatric Level I trauma center, UF Health TraumaOne, UF Health has long since cared for patients with TBI’s.
