HOUSTON — Two Houston police officers were shot Tuesday during a shooting at an apartment complex, authorities said.
Update 2:01 p.m. EDT Oct. 20: A Houston police officer died after being shot at an apartment complex Tuesday morning, KTRK reported. Another officer was wounded.
Sgt. Harold Preston, a 41-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, was the officer who died, the television station reported. He was set to retire this year.
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said Preston suffered multiple head wounds during the shooting, KHOU reported.
According to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, the second officer shot was Courtney Wallace, who was shot in the arm and is expected to recover.

The suspect surrendered at 10:26 a.m. after suffering a gunshot wound to his abdominal area, Houston police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon.
Acevedo identified the alleged shooter as Elmer Monzano, 51, who is from El Salvador. Acevedo said Manzano’s teenage son was also injured with a gunshot wound but is expected to recover.

Original report: A suspect was taken into custody by a SWAT team and was transported to an area hospital, KHOU reported.
According to police, the incident began as a disturbance call around 8 a.m., according to KPRC. Officers arrived at the scene and a SWAT team was called in, the television station reported.
Houston police Chief Art Acevedo confirmed in a series of tweets that two officers had been shot and that one person had been taken into custody.
Suspect has been taken into custody without further incident.

Acevedo did not reveal the condition of the officers or the suspect but promised more details in an afternoon news conference, KTRK reported.
