Acclaimed ‘Wolf Hall’ author, Hilary Mantel, dies at 70

Booker Prize-winning author Hilary Mantel died Thursday at the age of 70.

According to her agent, Mantel was surrounded by close friends and family when she died.

She won the Booker Prize twice for her 2009 book “Wolf Hall” and again in 2012 for its sequel “Bring Up the Bodies.” Both stories were part of a 16th-century English historical fiction trilogy that was eventually adapted for television.

According to The Associated Press, Mantel was born in 1952 in Derbyshire, England and later studied at the London School of Economics and Sheffield University. Before she became a novelist, she worked as a social worker at a geriatric hospital.

In the 1970s and 1980s, she lived in Botswana and Saudi Arabia with her husband, Gerald McEwen, a geologist, according to AP.

In a statement released Friday, her agent, Bill Hamilton, described her as “one of the greatest English novelists of this century.”

“It is with great sadness that A.M. Heath and HarperCollins announce that bestselling author Dame Hilary Mantel DBE died suddenly yet peacefully yesterday, surrounded by close family and friends, aged 70. Hilary Mantel was one of the greatest English novelists of this century, and her beloved works are considered modern classics. She will be greatly missed.”

Mantel is survived by her husband.
