NEW YORK — A massive rooftop pool may sound like a great way to cool down in New York, but installing one without permission might get you in hot water with the city’s Department of Buildings.
“New York. We know. It’s hot. We get it,” the agency tweeted this week after authorities said they discovered an unapproved, 480-square-foot pool atop an apartment building in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood. “But please don’t try to build a rooftop swimming pool without first getting permits and hiring professionals to do the job properly.”
According to WABC-TV, officials said the pool – which “wasn’t built to code and had to be removed” – was 30 feet long, 16 feet wide and 4 feet deep.
“Just shy of 60 tons of water sitting on top of the roof of this occupied building,” the department added.

On Thursday, WNYW-TV reported that its helicopter captured footage of the pool, which had been drained but remained on top of the building.
It wasn’t immediately clear whether the department had issued any citations or fines in connection with the incident, according to the news outlet.
