Purr-fect game: Cat dashes across the grass at Denver’s Coors Field

Coors Field is getting the All-Star Game, but the Denver baseball stadium is already famous. Not only for its high altitude, which causes baseballs to fly out of the park, but also the many feral cats that roam the stadium.

It’s appropriate. After all, MLB historian John Thorn, writing in his 2011 book, “Baseball in the Garden of Eden,” noted that the game that would evolve into baseball was originally called “three old cat” during the 1820s. And a black cat famously walked in front of the Chicago Cubs’ dugout at Shea Stadium during a 1969 game hosted by the New York Mets.

Friday night at Coors Field, one bold cat dashed across the park during the eighth inning of the Colorado Rockies’ game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the video of the feline flashing through the outfield went viral.

A Rockies spokesman told The Denver Post that a number of feral cats live around the ballpark.

“I had heard for many years about the cats in Coors Field from friends who work for the team,” Shannon Hurd, a season ticket holder, told the newspaper. “I almost always see one. I still dream of one running across my lap. I would be the person trying to catch it and take it home.”

Barbara Ford, who worked as a Denver parking meter reader in the late 1980s and early ’90s, said a feral cat colony has lived in the neighborhood near Coors Field for decades, the Post reported. Coors Field was built in 1995, two years after the Rockies played their first game in the major leagues.

“I carried cat food and water for them in my car,” Ford told the newspaper. “There were dozens and dozens. It used to be a bunch of old warehouses in the area, and they were all over. I even snagged a few kittens.”
