According to The Associated Press, the recall is over a cracked fuel injector that can spill fuel or leak vapors into a hot engine, creating a fire risk.

The recall is for Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs 2020 to 2023 models. These SUVs all have 1.5-liter and three-cylinder engines, according to the AP.

On Thursday, Ford reportedly said that it is not recommending that owners of these cars stop driving them or park them outdoors. It said that fires are rare and don’t usually occur once the car engine is off, according to the AP.

According to the AP, Ford said that it has received about 20 reports of fires, which includes about three that happened in nearby structures. Ford also said that it has about four claims of fires that were noticed less than five minutes after the car engines were turned off. In addition, Ford reportedly has four injury claims that don’t include burns and 43 legal claims related to the problem.

Repairs haven’t been made available yet, but owners should schedule services with a preferred dealer once they are available, said executive director of customer experience, Jim Azzouz, in a statement, according to the AP. Owners should expect to receive a letter notification starting on Dec. 19. Owners can take their SUVs to the dealer as well and get a free loaner vehicle or can get free pickup and delivery.

What dealers will do is inspect the injectors and replace them if need be. According to the AP, Ford said it’s extending warranties so that they will cover cracked fuel injectors for up to 15 years.

Ford said it will be updating the car’s engine-control software to detect if an injector is cracked, giving drivers a warning message to get service. The AP said that Ford will also install a tube to drain fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces like an engine.

Ford said it will not be replacing the injectors since the failure rate that leads to leaks is low, according to the AP.
